Tease the couple like you love them, because you do, and because their grandmother is in the third row.

The roast dial
Before writing a single joke, answer two questions:
- How much loving roasting can I personally pull off? Some people can land a 7. Some people's delivery makes a 4 feel mean
- How much will this room tolerate? A crowd of college friends is not a crowd with three generations and two families meeting for the first time
Take the lower number. Always the lower number. A roast that would've killed at the bachelor party can go sideways in front of the aunties, and there's no recovering the room after a joke lands as cruelty.
The best trick I know: quote them
In my speech for my brother-in-law, the biggest early laughs came from a simple move. I listed the things he'd called me over the years: best friend, hero, physique idol, and my personal favorite, his guruji. Then the line that made it work: "These are all his words, not mine. I would never make this up."
Why it's bulletproof:
- The subject wrote the joke. You're just reporting
- It flatters and teases at the same time
- Nobody can be offended by their own quotes, and the room knows it
If the person you're toasting has ever texted you something ridiculous, that text is worth more than any joke you'll write.
Fair game vs. never
Roasting the room
Naming friends in the audience is rocket fuel, in small doses:
- One or two targets beyond the couple, maximum
- Only people whose reaction you can predict with certainty, because the room watches the target's face, not yours
- Keep it warm: an age joke to a friend who jokes about his age is a gift. The same joke to someone quietly sensitive about it is a wound with witnesses
The exit ramp
Every roast section needs a landing that converts the teasing into affection: the "but here's the truth" pivot. The jokes about my brother-in-law's appetite and his 34-year-old knees all cashed out into the real point, that he fit into my crew of friends fifteen years older because he's genuinely mature beyond his age. The roast was the setup. The compliment was the punchline.
A great roast makes the person look better, not worse. If they wouldn't hug you after, rewrite it.
